Jeremy Asks… I want to improve my credit score quickly, is there anything I can do to boost my score?

Despite the fact that raising your credit score is often times a slow and steady process, there are in fact a few things you can do to give your score that extra boost with just a few easy tweaks to your current habits. A few ideas are listed below to make a quick impact.

  • Automatic Bill Payments: The most important thing you can do to quickly improve your credit score is to pay your bills on time. An easy way to make sure that this done on a month to month basis is to set up automatic billing for at least the minimum amount due on each bill  – pay more if possible.
  • Pay Off Your Debt : If you have a large amount of debt looming over your head and are able to pay a good portion of this debt off in one extra payment this will help increase your credit score rapidly. A ratio of 50% or less on your balance to limit ratio will make a big impact quickly. One way to raise some cash is to use some of your vacation savings, sell that extra car, have a garage sale, collect on some personal loans and you should be able to make a dent in your debt quickly.
  • Raise Your Credit Card Limit: If you are unable to pay the bills to the 50% ratio as mentioned above – ask the creditor for a limit increase… If you are in a financial situation that allows you to pay your bills on time and have an income that would allow you to support a higher credit limit, then call your credit card company to get your limit raised. This will help increase the amount of available credit which should increase your score.
  • Don’t Sign Up For Multiple Credit Cards: Whenever you take on new credit your credit score will be impacted, so next time you are shopping at a department store and the cashier asks you if you’d like to sign up for their credit card to save an extra %15, just say NO – it won’t be worth the extra interest rate increase on the card for a lower credit score.
