For a small fee, you get your credit report, your credit score, and suggestions on how to improve your score. Mortgage lenders will use these scores to determine which programs and interest rates you qualify for; the higher your score, the lower the rate you should be offered. Thanks to a new federal law, all U.S. residents are entitled to one free credit report annually from each of the three national credit bureaus.   You can also obtain one from the bureaus directly.

There are also many banks and credit card companies that offer credit monitoring and send you your  score monthly. Take advantage of these services by obtaining your reports, reading them carefully, and taking the steps necessary to correct any errors.

Remember though, the score you receive are your “consumer scores” and may or may not be the same scores as a creditor will obtain. Creditors have their own guidelines for credit risk. If your scores are high (680-850) overall you will most likely be fine either way but if they are on the mid to low end, (550-680) then it would be in your best interest to work on increasing the numbers!
