Simon Asks… I want to get approved to buy a house but I’ve heard it is confusing and stressful. Can you help?

Absolutely I can help.

Being prepared is the best defense to confusion and stress.

I read that more than 70 percent of Americans say getting a mortgage today is a serious national problem. I had one borrower tell me that waiting to hear if they were approved for the mortgage was more stressful than waiting to hear if they got a job. I believe it – if consumers are feeling it – it is real!

Take the following steps to ensure a smooth process:

  • Pay down your debt as much as you can before applying for a mortgage
  • Make sure you do a credit audit a few months before you apply for a mortgage and take care of anything negative
  • Don’t make a major purchase on credit and don’t apply for new credit before you apply for a mortgage  (or at any time during the process)
  • Save as much as possible for a down payment
  • Get all your “docs” in a row before you apply for a mortgage
  • Be realistic with your wants and needs
  • Research your mortgage professional
